Stefano Rista Colin Ernst Kyle Touhey Andy Wong Mark Godley Zack P These are Canada's finest (and all from Squamish) who are competing in Italy in the world championship Kiteboard races. The first race is Oct 2nd. Best of luck to them all.
Looks like 153 racers in the men's division. I could be a bit out as there were so many to count
There is an Opening Series made up of a qualifying series and a final series. The top group of the Final Opening Series goes on to the Medal Series.
The provisional results after the first 3 races for the qualifying series of the Opening Series shows 5 of our Canadian guys in the top half; Kyle, Stef, Adam, Zac and Andy. That is great! Way to go! Kyle did really well counting a 5, 12 and 32 to put him in 31st. Way to go Kyle!
The others are a bit deeper in the pack as they are carrying DNF's. Since these are provisional results I'm thinking some of these DNF's might change to Redress points. Hopefully this is the case for Andy as he is carrying a 16, 10 and DNF. Hope that DNF was due to something that might change cause the 16 and 10 are great results. But we won't know what happened until we hear from them, or see results after protests etc.
There are no women's results up yet but there are 42 on the registration list.
That's a total of 195 kites on the water racing. There will be stories for sure.
Hey Don, can you explain the scoring? Is it the same as the Squamish series? I'm just curious as there seem to be multiple people each race with the same score. If I understand it correctly, this means that racers are considered tied as they cross the finish line, is that correct?
Todd There were actually three mens fleets running separate races. The highest scoring racers from these fleets will be put in a gold fleet later for the really competitive racing. The rest or the racers will race in lower fleets. CG
Pretty crazy racing yesterday. barely enough wind to tack and gybe at times - 2 foot chop
I think I was the only one who was scathed by the pack. At the first top mark when I was in 5th or 6th, Another racer that was to windward and behind of me and dove his kite into my lines breaking one of my steering lines. it was pretty scary floating kite down in the water with 45 more people rounding behind me within just a couple feet.
Luckily my protest went according to plan and I will receive the average of my qualifying scores for race 2. this equals 13 points right now but could change (hopefully for the better)
we are racing in three fleets for the first 2 days. we are reseeded every day to keep the fleets equal (by standings)
On day 3 the top 1/3rd will move to gold fleet, you take your qualifying standing i.e. 31 for me 33 for kyle and that becomes your first race which you can use as a drop. day 4 is the medal race for the top 10 and in theory you can win the event from tenth place on the final day.
The results from Day 2 are in and the crew is doing well.
Kyle is 19th (three top 5 finishes in the last two days) Stef is 23rd (three top 5 finishes in the last two days) Colin is 34th (two top 5 finishes in the last two days) Andy is 42nd (after discards, all his races that have counted have been in the top 15) Sweet.... that's 10% of the top 42!
Zach is 69th (impressive considering he didn't have a race board until September)
Anyone know what happened to Mark Godley, it looks like he didn't compete on the first day of racing.
Apparently all that yelling at the spit actually helps.
Our guys have done great. Stef, Kyle,Colin, and Andy all placed very well in the top gold fleet. It looks like Andy had some problems in the last two races unfortunately. And Adam Vance did really well finishing #20.
I think this is their final standings since only the top ten racers compete today.
And Zac and Mark G are putting up good results in their fleets.
