Hydrofoil kite racing

Postby cglazier » Mon Aug 26, 2013 7:27 pm

I hear about Johnny H winning a race in San Francisco on a hydrofoil.
I have googled, searched youtube and vimeo and found nothing.
Please post any links about that race and any videos of hydrofoils showing foot switches during jibes.
I am working of foot switching and need help.

My Carafino hydrofoil works but seems to have a maximum speed. I am looking for a faster one.

 CG

The Taaroa Sword seems to be the weapon of choice.

Didn't see Johnny ripping in SF on thurs (thanks air Canada).

However checked out the boards and foils.

Johnny was on a sword.

Mike is working on a foil board

Aguera foil board is looking rad.

It's going to be fun to see how this plays out.

that is the shit!

*lone tumbleweed bounces off a pile of discarded g10 race fins

safer on the beach for everyone too!! i dont imagine any of you are going to be leaving your 3k foils hanging around where the numpties are going to stub a toe on them.

chris I'd love to give your foil setup another try with the straps on.

so glad the days of the beach guillotine are over.

Future evolution suggestion/prediction: foil configuration which can be ridden submersed (like current-generation foils), optimized for upwind angles, forces and speeds, but which can also be ridden higher in the water, in "surface-piercing, ventilating mode"... greatly (and variably, depending on height) reduced wetted area for screaming reaches, in which only a fraction of the foil's potential lift (and drag) is appropriate.

I'm curious if any of the board designers are going to come up with a foil that's along the lines of what these ultra fast cats have, instead of a traditional foil shape.

those ultra fast AC cats would probably be using a more traditional foil if their design rules allowed it.

might happen in kite racing for the same reason though.

AC boats dont race in over 20 knots apparently. I would imagine they are optimized for that range?

Optimized is an understatement.

You have to keep in mind that the apparent wind when you're doing 40kts on a broad reach is in the range of 45kts though.

Thinking foil chord etc based on hull speed in water.
