Finding a light wind "race" board

Postby davidkites » Thu Jun 27, 2013 1:18 am

Hi guys,

I'm going to be moving back to Ontario soon where there's minimal wind in the summer. I'm hoping that I could still get a few kiteboarding days by riding a racing board.

Does anyone have some thoughts on what I'd need in terms of a light wind race board? I'm 6', 165-170lbs. Also, what's the lowest wind that a fairly new kiteboarder needs to ride upwind on a race board?

Where in ontario ? If the wind is light and variable the problem is keeping the kite in the sky in the lulls that go to zero. I grew up on the west end of lake ontario. My buddies back there use large directionals(surfboards) generally speaking . Some of the free-race boards might be a good option..

you need this race board:

Then you need a 15m Ozone Edge, which I just happen to have for sale!

You'll be riding in sub 10kts no problem.

I'll sell you my race board for $700.00 , but i dont think thats the way to go. When its " 10 knots " in Ontario it usually is lulling to almost zero. Have fun trying to relaunch a big kite in those conditions. Also we started kitesurfing in Burlington bay in 2000 and am/are familiar with the weather there. Big boards and relatively smaller/faster kites seem to work best.

oh... I guess if it lulls to 0, I won't be able to even keep the kite in the air...

guess I'll be doing nearly no kiting in August, and waiting until September to kite again...?

I kited 3/3 days when I was in Kingston last summer ranging from 17m-11m in their thermal winds.

The big 17m race kites are engineered to fly well and not crash/stall. you may be pleasantly surprised. I find that we can comfortable kite in a stable 6 knots. If it is 10 knots you should have 0 issues.
