1. Flying for the first time with a 160 sm half empty ION golf bag. What would be the best way to pack a carbon fiber strut ( aka mast) into half empty bag? Empty couse no board will be packed.
2. Now regarding the airlines... Aero Mexico vs United vs Alaska Vs WestJet Vs Air canada - who has the most lenient luggage policy? I know some carriers do not care about the size but the weight. and then there are some who'd be happy to charge 200$ for an over-sized board/sport/golf bag?
3. Last but not least since the stop over will be longer than 12 hours between flights, does it mean that one has to pick up your luggage and then pay a second time at the time of a check in!?
Hi Art. I have often traveled with that ION bag. Every airline is strict about the 50 lb limit and will charge you a lot if you are overweight. Buy a hand held luggage scale (at London Drugs or Canada Tire) if you are unsure about your weight. They also have an oversize bag charge but I often get by free with that bag.. at least on Westjet. If they ask what's in the bag avoid using the word 'board'. They have a fixed fee for surfboards and similar boards. I always call it my golf bag and if they question the contents I just say it contains kite gear.
I wrap all my boards and foil parts in foam for protection when putting them inside the main bag. Find any soft light foam. I have made custom covers for my wings and mast. A good source of soft foam sheets is floor tiles (pack of four for $20 Canada Tire or Home Depot). I cut them to shape and glue them with a hot glue gun.. some people just use duck tape. I use these covers when transporting gear in my vehicle too.
I don't know how strict each of those airlines is. Try to fly direct as each separate flight will have baggage charges.
