Anyone kited on the south coast of Oregon? I'm down on the Dunes enjoying some gasoline powered fun and am wondering about kiting locations other than Flores lake. anyone been down this way kiting? I'm also thinking of heading south into Northern California and wonder about areas down there also.
The Oregon coast is a great place to kite. It's just a matter of finding wind. I was there this whole week. Lincoln city, about 1 hr 30 min north of Florence has a small kite scene going on and some decent winds (13-17kts at 6pm, windier at noon). The surf is fun as well. Florence has warmer water than Lincoln city, but it wasn't very windy when I was there, so I just swam and like you had fun with an atv! about 3hrs south of Florence, there's crescent city in the northern tip of California. Huge waves, and 10-15kts winds when I was there. lots of surfers, so be careful.
Other notable places are Port Orford, and Newport. Port Orford isn't too far south of floras lake, and is pretty windy (15-20kts). Only problem is that it's got plenty of jagged islands popping out of the water, so you gotta really be careful where you're riding. Newport is south of Lincoln city, and has a couple of kiting schools/shops. haven't kited there, but looks promising with a bay for flat water fun!
Kiting on the coast can be awesome, especially with the surf they have. Just make sure you have enough speed to get through or jump them, or else you'll perform the tumbling barrel roll in the surf just like I did
Sounds like you had a great trip Jerry. One thing if your going into big surf, make sure you can hold your breath for a while if you were to get seperated from your gear I will be strength training for this in the pool for next season Good write up
Cool, Thanks for the feedback,...checked out Flores Lake today, wind was SE 10-14 but tommorow is calling for NW 16, hanging around at Gold Beach to see if it will happen. Thinking of going back north to check out Waldport as per the Kiteboarding mag article. NW winds could light up the estuary. Know of anything down around Pt.Reyes? Is it any good around Frisco this time of year? (Chrissy Field rotor 27sec hangtime here we come.) yowza.
Good advice colin. might as well hit the pool now while the weather's still rotten. At least CG won't have a huge advantage for the most kiting days in a year Sorry Al, I don't know about reyes or frisco. I didn't go past crescent city, as I only took a week off . I did go to hood river for the first time though! Wicked place, so much room to rig and launch, and so many shops.
Either way, your chances down there are probably much better than they are up here
South beach (also called south jetty, just south of Newport) has great wind, with a nice 6 mile downwinder to Ona beach if you've got someone to run shuttle. It's considered central coast so it may be further north than you're looking for, but that's where I usually kite when I'm at the coast. Plus you can hit up Rogue brewery for some really good beer.
