SWS Squamish Wind Graph

Postby Alan » Fri Jul 02, 2010 5:54 pm

There is now a live Squamish wind graph for your viewing pleasure at
http://www.squamishwindsports.com/wind
I've attached a screenshot below so you can see an example
(and to see its Help and About popups).

Back in May I talked with SWS's Chris Glazier about what was happening with the
new Squamish Terminals weather station (installed this spring).
There appeared to be no public wind graph in the works.
To make a long story short, I contacted the various parties involved
(Axys Technologies, Squamish Terminals, SiiTech, more SWS exec),
sorted out clearance for data access with Squamish Terminals/Siitech,
then wrote the database software (we started archiving data on June 16),
then worked on the data presentation software.
Today is the first day that this is publicly available on the SWS website.

There will be some changes/improvements in the future.
The first of these will be another link suitable for cell phones (just a brief text report).

Now if we can only fix the weather,
we'll be able to spend less time watching graphs on computers and more time
on the water! :D

ABSOLUTELY GREAT ALAN
Big thanks from all of us.
I know it took a lot of work arranging all the data access and then programming the graphics display and database. Excellent.

Excellent work! Now I can cancel my iKite membership!

Is it possible to add the "lulls" to the graph? When its averaging 20, but gusts are 5 - 30 it helps paint an ugly picture!

The raw data available from the sensor at the Squamish Terminals does not include the lulls values.

On another note, this sensor is located at the south end of the terminal buildings which should provide a more unobstructed wind reading than the ikitesurf sensor does (ikitesurf sensor is located at the north end of the buildings near bozo beach).

Yes, as Chris mentioned there are no lull measurements provided.
Of course, I wish that there were, but lull measurements are not even mentioned in the specification.
References:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_ ... ion_System
http://vislab-ccom.unh.edu/~schwehr/pap ... Annex1.pdf
Below is Table 1from the latter reference, showing the *possible* AIS meteorological data.
Most stations only report a small fraction of this data.
The Squamish Terminals station provides average wind speed, direction, gust, temperature, pressure,
humidity and dew point.

On the plus side, it's in a more exposed location (as Chris mentioned),
the 3 minute measurement-frequency is nice,
and the price is right. :)
