Harbour Air is planning to operate floatplanes from the Nexen sailing area. No, not near it, directly from it, as if tens of windsurfers aren't using it every sunny day. I don't know how exactly they're planning to achieve that, but with next years Transport Canada regulations, they will need to certify their operation in Squamish as a proper aerodrome, which would mean designating runways – currently drafted to be in conflict with us – and ensuring safe traffic separation. In Victoria for example Harbour Air's aerodrome is already certified, albeit to different regulations, and the result is that all traffic except large ferries is excluded from their runways. For Nexen that would mean no sailing east of Nexen beach, only between Nexen and the terminals. This restriction would likely extend quite far upwind, to account for the required clearway.
Personally I think floatplanes should be operating from Darrel Bay. Even if they want to dock downtown, they can just land near Darrel Bay and then sail the floatplane as a regular vessel to the dock (at 20km/h, not 120km/h).
Nexen will be kiteboarder-friendly once oceanfront is built up in a couple years, and we have no idea whether the spit will be available going forward (and we know it won't fit everyone if Nexen is crippled). If you care about keeping Nexen sailing area, please send a comment about that to the district. Today, because the deadline tomorrow (Sep 9th). Also ask your friends to do the same. Strength in numbers.
Thanks, I submitted a comment. How would they be able to land there on a wind day anyway? A quick Google search suggests that 20kt and 2-3ft chop is the limit http://www.avcanada.ca/forums2/viewtopic.php?t=99201
