I was there in early December and on light wind days it sometimes seemed like at least half of us out on the water were flying Flysurfer Souls. I am having a lot of fun with mine.. definitely the easiest foil kite to relaunch that I have ever owned. At least five of us in the Vancouver area have them now.
Most of us have bought the Soul 12m size as our light wind kite for Vancouver. We are all on hydrofoil boards.
For years I have been preaching that for light winds people should spend their money on light wind boards not on really big kites. Hydrofoil boards are ideal of course, but big door type twin tips or very wide surf boards also give good light wind performance.. and they cost a lot less than big kites. And the smaller kites (12m) are much more fun and responsive than bigger (>15m) kites.
There are also some good inflatable kites for light wind like the Mono, Boxer, Rebel, Ultra etc. but they are all a bit heavier than foil kites like the Soul which seems to stay in the air in very little wind.
Certainly a bigger kite would get slightly better low wind range. But most of us are finding the 12m works well with a hydrofoil at Spanish Banks. The downside of a bigger kite is that it has more limited high wind range which can be a problem if the wind comes up. It will be interesting if somebody around here gets a 15m or bigger one and then we shall see. Personally I go kiting on my 12m when there are no whitecaps and the water is quite flat. So far, when the wind picks up I have never had to come in and rig a smaller kite.
Actually the Soul and most foil kites have very good wind range. Their high aspect shape can spill excess wind when they are depowered.
Everyone I know who has bought the Soul kite is a hydrofoiler. I don't know how well it is suited to those riding twin tips. Like all foil kites, it has a softer feel and it lifts you in jumps rather than jerks you... then it floats you very well.
I have owned 6 different foil kites over the years and the Soul is certainly an advancement in foil kite user friendliness.
