Hey folks, My wife and I just moved to Masset on Haida Gwaii for a couple of years. We are both avid kiters and I'm looking forward to share some insights since there isn't much information out there. So far conditions have been great and I've even done two amazing 20KM downwinders in small waves with nice flats between them. There's a possibility for a 60km one which would require some planning.
Please don't hesitate to contact me should you want more information and I'm open to suggestions on how I should share my sessions.
That's awesome. Thanks for sharing. I definitely intend to get there sooner or later. Looks like epic kite surf potential and I hear the fishing ain't too bad. it is also the best dollar value for air miles points.....short but expensive flight.
you could use the big wave Dave ssession logs to record your sessions. A nice way to remember the details for yourself but also to share. Stoked for you! And for me when I get there.
Glad I got someone pumped. Although I couldn't go out, a strong south east yesterday had a lot of potential. Great waves and great direction for someone like me who surfs regular (I. E. Left leg forward). It seems everywhere I go the wind is never on the right side but here it'll be perfect. I'll post again when I get out on the next SE.
You're right aeroplan offers the flight as a cheap local flight while a regular flight is expensive.
I might have a spare room available for fellow kiters and next door is an air bnb (might be cheap off season - OBX style). Strong September winds coming soon and water still warm (ish)
I used to live in Masset and did quite a bit of windsurfing while I was there. There are some great spots. I found a really great spot with a nice point break on the sound side, it's at a spot called Lawn Hill. Check it out. here is a bog post about it http://blakesbig-badblog.blogspot.ca/20 ... shore.html
Also, I have 2 friends who are on there way to Masset right now. Their names are Cat and Caleb. They are surfers, not into kiting (yet) keep your eyes open for them.
There is an amazing break behind the elephant cage as well, when the sun is shining and the wind it blowing go and check it out. It is T shaped, and the wind is really clean there.
Hey Julien, know of any spots near Queen Charlotte City or Skidegate? I'll be staying with friends in QC City soon. Sounds from this forum like Massett and the north coast has the best spots on Haida Gwaii. Hope to get up there once or twice, but would be great to have somewhere local too.
From Google Earth looks like there are wide open beaches all round the islands. I'm excited.
Hey guys... we've created a FB Haida Gwaii kitesurfing page. We're a very small group but we've started to post when and where we're out. Feel free to join if you're visiting or just curious. Cheers
