After work today I headed down to Jericho for a quick session. I launched on my 12m with a foil board an headed out towards the pylons. When I was jibing, my QR released and my shoulder dislocated. I flagged down a outrigger canoe and he called the coast guard who picked me up 20 minutes later. I had a quick ride on a sailboat to get me out of the water while I waited for the coast guard. A quick trip to the ER and it's back in its socket. Not super fun. It's weird because I checked my release before a Jericho session 1.5 weeks ago and had no problems in lit conditions. I didn't touch the bar since. Now I have a sore shoulder, slightly numb fingers, and some time off the water, bummer. Thanks to those that were looking out for me and helped me. Daniel
Wow, sorry to hear. I wish you a speak recovery. Glad that you got assistance.
I had been out at Jericho on my foilboard earlier in the afternoon and had a great session. And there were a few kiters farther west at Spanish Banks when you were out but from that far away nobody noticed you were having difficulties.
Glad you are ok dan. I followed right behind you, also had less than stellar time.
I got caught by shore bubble. When I couldn't relaunch I popped my qr for an easier paddle in (just 20-30m)....but my qr line snapped and kite took off. It blew downwind faster than I could paddle surfboard. So eventually the Cg boat grabbed my kite too.
Lessons and notes:
-- check your qr line.....if frayed replace it NOW, not "next session ".
-- that sideshow westerly at sp banks seems to turn side off towards Jericho. Self rescue in from way out would be a challenge.
-- I called in to Coast guard to confirm I was ok so they didn't search for me. (And to confirm you were rescued). If you lose your kite (or you are a bystander when this kind of thing happening) call *16 and tell Cg what's up....as they may be flying blind.
-- quite grateful for the kits coast guard station back in action!
-- finally.....always bring all toys....sure wish I had my 17m! Also, if there's even remotely possible wind go check.....I was surprised to see kiters out, could have left work an hour earlier and got a session and avoided chaos. ...doofus!
